North Shore Railroad Company & Affiliates Awarded for Outstanding 2015 Safety Record
NORTHUMBERLAND, PA – Wednesday, April 6, 2016, the North Shore Railroad Company & Affiliates (NSHR) was recognized for its employees’ safety efforts by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) in Washington, DC.
The ASLRRA awarded short line railroads, operated by NSHR, Jake Safety Awards with Distinction. These 2015 awards were received by: the Juniata Valley Railroad, the Lycoming Valley Railroad, the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad, the Shamokin Valley Railroad, and the Union County Industrial Railroad.
In 2015, NSHR achieved a cumulative company safety record of 1.05 injuries per 200,000 man-hours worked. The ASLRRA national average for 2015 was 2.58 injuries per 200,000 man-hours worked. The injury rate per 200,000 man-hours worked is the Federal Railroad Administration’s metric for measuring how safe a railroad is – the lower that number, the safer the railroad.
Shane Smith, NSHR Superintendent/Rules Examiner, said, “It’s truly an honor to receive safety awards, especially from ASLRRA. Our 2015 safety record is a real testament of our employee’s dedication to keeping themselves, each other, and their communities safe. They do a great job! Our core safety objective is to reduce injury and illness rates and preserve a culture that is committed to workplace safety and health.”
